The introduction and development of the free steered vehicle
(FSV) transport in British coal mines probably represents
the most significant change in underground transport for some
considerable time.

A typical FSV is a self propelled Diesel engine vehicle
running on rubber tyred wheels, generally operating without
much roadway floor preparation, designed to be driven from a
centrally placed driver's cab, and used primarily for transporting
materials and equipment.
