Community Heating
at Hirwaun

Built in 1965, the two multi-storey
buildings - 'The Towers' and 'The Beacons'-
together with a Sheltered Accommodation
block - 'The Haven' - and some low rise public
sector housing, are now managed by
Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council
at their Manchester Place location.

In recent years the buildings have benefited
from structural fabric improvements and
upgrading to include uPVC double glazing,
flat roof treatments and external cladding to
provide an improved environment
for occupants.

      Technical Details

In the basement of 'The Beacons', four boilers
provide full space heating and hot water
throughout the year to the 96 flats in each of
the multi-storey blocks' the 24 flats in the
sheltered accomodation and the remaining
site buildings.

The boilers were installed when the buildings
were constructed yet still operate at high
levels of efficiency. This is due to the high
heat content of the fuel and the effective
in-house arrangements for plant operation
and management.

The complex consumes some 650 tonnes of
high quality Tower anthracite beans each year.
At a delivered price of 0.6 pence per kWh, the
dwellings have the benefit of "Best Value"
energy on the market - both today and in
the future.
